VFS service charge Rs 800 is separate. 'Other nationals' pay Rs 8,650.
Double-entry (Temporary Visitor) Rs 500 (charged same as multiple-entry for Indians; general new fee approx 30,000 yen) Rs 500 Typically valid up to 6 months; two entries; each stay up to 90 days — Japan's schedule groups double-entry with multiple-entry; for Indians the concessional Rs 500 applies. 'Other nationals' pay Rs 17,350 (double/multiple).
Multiple-entry (Temporary Visitor) Rs 500 (concessional for Indians; general new fee approx 30,000 yen, raised from 6,000 yen on 01-Jul-2026) Rs 500 Valid 1, 3 or 5 years (embassy discretion); multiple entries; each stay up to 90 days (or 15/30/90 per category) — Concessional bilateral rate; unchanged after the hike. VFS service charge Rs 800 separate. 'Other nationals' pay Rs 17,350.
Transit Category ABOLISHED from 01-Jul-2026 (previously Rs 50 for Indians / approx 700 yen general) Rs 50 (pre-Jul-2026; now discontinued) Formerly short transit (up to ~15 days); apply for a Temporary Visitor / short-term stay visa instead — The separate transit visa was abolished for ALL nationalities on 01-Jul-2026. VFS one-pager (01-Apr-2025) had listed Rs 50 for Indians. Confirm on portal.
Japan eVISA (short-term single-entry tourism) Rs 500 consular fee (concessional) + accredited-agency service fee (varies; total commonly ~Rs 3,200) Rs 500 consular fee; total varies - confirm on portal Single entry; stay up to 90 days; e-visa decision typically 3-5 working days by email — For Indians the eVISA is applied ONLY via JATA-accredited travel agencies (not the direct MOFA eVISA portal). Consular fee stays the concessional Rs 500; agency service fee is separate and varies - confirm on portal. Available through New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai jurisdictions.
VFS Global service charge (all visa types, add-on) Rs 800 (inclusive of all taxes) per application Rs 800 Per application; non-refundable; over and above the consular fee — Mandatory VFS service charge; optional courier Rs 550 and photo Rs 150. Indian nationals pay a bilateral CONCESSIONAL consular fee of Rs 500 for BOTH single-entry and multiple-entry visas (unchanged after the July 1, 2026 global hike). This is NOT a straight yen conversion; the general (non-concessional) new fees are approx 15,000 yen single / 30,000 yen multiple, which for 'other nationals' in India are localised to Rs 8,650 single and Rs 17,350 multiple/double. A separate VFS Global service charge of Rs 800 (incl. all taxes) per application applies over and above the consular fee, plus optional courier (Rs 550) and photo (Rs 150). The separate TRANSIT visa category was abolished for all nationalities from July 1, 2026 (travellers now apply for a Temporary Visitor / short-term stay visa). The Japan eVISA is available to Indians only via JATA-accredited travel agencies for short-term single-entry tourism; the consular fee remains the concessional Rs 500 but agencies add their own service fee (total commonly ~Rs 3,200) which varies by agency.

Overview

A japan visa for indians is mandatory before you travel – Japan offers no visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival to Indian passport holders, regardless of whether you are visiting for tourism, business or family. The good news is that the process has become far simpler: since 1 September 2025, eligible Indian residents can obtain a single-entry short-term tourist visa entirely online through the JAPAN eVISA system, while all other visa categories continue via VFS Global, the Embassy of Japan’s official partner in India.

Who needs a Japan visa for Indians and which type to choose

Every Indian citizen needs a visa, and the correct category depends entirely on your trip – so it pays to decide this before you gather documents. Choosing the wrong route is a common early mistake that leads to wasted appointments and delays:

  • Single-entry tourist eVISA – the fastest option for a one-time holiday of up to 90 days, submitted online via a MOFA-accredited travel agency. Indian residents cannot lodge on the government portal directly; an accredited agency must apply on your behalf, and the result is a digital Visa Issuance Notice (no passport sticker, no centre visit).
  • Sticker visa via VFS Global – required for multiple-entry, business, visiting relatives, or transit visas. These are submitted in person at a Japan VFS Global centre and pasted into your passport.

Documents required for Indians

Whichever route you use, prepare a strong, consistent file:

  • Passport (issued within 10 years, 6+ months validity, two blank pages) and a recent 45×35 mm photo.
  • Completed application form and a day-by-day itinerary showing arrival/departure flight numbers and dates.
  • Confirmed flight and hotel bookings, plus the address and contact of your first accommodation.
  • Personal bank statement for the last 6 months (stamped and signed) as proof of funds.
  • Income Tax Return (ITR) acknowledgements for the last 3 years and employment proof (payslips or a company letter).

Fees and processing time

Japan is one of the most affordable visas for Indians. The consular fee is only around ₹450-500 for a single-entry visa (slightly more for multiple-entry). On top of this you pay a VFS Global or accredited-agency service charge – typically in the ₹800-₹1,900 band – so most applicants budget roughly ₹1,300 upwards in total, before any optional courier or biometric charges. Because fee schedules are revised periodically, always confirm the current amount on the official portal before paying. Processing normally takes about 5-7 working days from the date a complete application is received, though peak seasons (cherry-blossom spring and autumn foliage) can add delays, so apply two to four weeks ahead. Note that the embassy does not offer a paid fast-track service, so building in a comfortable buffer before your departure date is the only reliable way to avoid last-minute stress.

Common reasons for rejection

Most refusals are avoidable. The frequent culprits are insufficient or unexplained bank balances, weak ties to India, and inconsistencies between your itinerary, bookings and stated purpose. Vague plans, missing ITRs, or a mismatch between funds and the length of stay also raise red flags. A clear, realistic itinerary backed by matching financial and employment documents is the single best way to strengthen your case.

Tips for a smooth application

  • Match your bank balance to your trip length – show enough to comfortably cover the days you plan to stay.
  • Keep dates identical across your flights, hotels and itinerary.
  • If you only need a single-entry holiday visa, the eVISA route saves a centre visit; for anything else, book your VFS appointment early.
  • Verify your chosen agency’s MOFA accreditation through the Embassy of Japan’s website for your consular district.

Can Indians apply for a Japan eVISA?

Yes, since 1 September 2025 eligible Indian residents can get a single-entry short-term tourist eVISA online. However, you cannot apply directly on the government portal - a MOFA-accredited travel agency must submit the application on your behalf.

How much does a Japan tourist visa cost for Indians?

The Japan consular fee is very low - around ₹450-500 for a single-entry visa. Adding the VFS Global or accredited-agency service charge (roughly ₹800-₹1,900), most applicants pay about ₹1,300 upwards in total. Confirm current fees on the official portal.

How long does Japan visa processing take?

Typically 5-7 working days from the date a complete application is received. During peak travel seasons or around public holidays it can take longer, so apply two to four weeks before your trip.

Where do Indians apply for a Japan sticker visa?

What documents are required for a Japan tourist visa from India?

No. The eVISA route for Indians is limited to single-entry tourism visas. For multiple-entry, business or transit visas you must apply for a sticker visa through VFS Global.
