Fee Note

Final cost depends on visa category, stay duration, and service level.

Visa TypeOfficial FeeApprox. INRValidity / Notes
Short-stay Type C — Adult €90 ≈ ₹9,900 Single/multiple entry; stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period (90/180 rule) — Consular fee only. VFS service fee separate (varies — confirm at VFS/consulate). Mandatory travel medical insurance min €30,000. Fee raised from €80 to €90 on 11 June 2024.
Short-stay Type C — Child aged 6 to under 12 €45 ≈ ₹4,950 Same as adult; up to 90 days within any 180-day period — Reduced fee. Raised from €40 to €45 on 11 June 2024. VFS service fee separate; insurance €30,000 still required.
Short-stay Type C — Child under 6 €0 (free) ≈ ₹0 Same as adult; up to 90 days within any 180-day period — Consular visa fee waived for children under 6 by all Schengen states regardless of nationality. VFS may still waive or charge a service fee — confirm at VFS/consulate. Insurance €30,000 still required.
Multiple-entry (cascade) — 1-year validity €90 ≈ ₹9,900 Multiple-entry, 1-year validity; each stay max 90 days per 180-day period. Standard Visa Code cascade entry point. — Same €90 fee — the cascade affects validity, not the fee. Adult rate; €45 for child 6–12, free under 6. VFS service fee separate; insurance €30,000 required.
Multiple-entry (cascade) — 2-year validity (India-specific) €90 ≈ ₹9,900 Multiple-entry, 2-year validity; each stay max 90 days per 180-day period. Issued to Indian nationals who have obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years (India-specific rules adopted 18 April 2024). — Same €90 fee. Validity capped by remaining passport validity. VFS service fee separate; insurance €30,000 required.
Multiple-entry (cascade) — up to 5-year validity (India-specific) €90 ≈ ₹9,900 Multiple-entry, up to 5-year validity; each stay max 90 days per 180-day period. Issued to Indian nationals after a 2-year visa, if passport has sufficient validity remaining. — Same €90 fee — cascade changes validity, not price. Maximum validity limited by passport expiry. VFS service fee separate; insurance €30,000 required.
VFS Global / consulate service fee (all types) varies — confirm at consulate/VFS ≈ ₹1,700–₹3,200 (varies by destination mission; confirm) N/A — administrative fee per application — Non-refundable service charge, SEPARATE from the €90 consular fee. Amount differs per Schengen country and is set/updated by VFS Global India. Not an official EU-published figure — confirm exact amount at VFS/consulate at time of application.

The €90 consular visa fee is the ONLY fee that goes to the Schengen state. It is SEPARATE from: (1) the VFS Global / consulate service fee (varies by destination mission, typically ~₹1,700-₹3,200 in India — confirm at VFS/consulate), and (2) mandatory travel medical insurance with minimum coverage of €30,000 (required under EU Visa Code Reg. (EC) 810/2009, buy separately). Short-stay Type C allows stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period (90/180 rule). INR figures are approximate at ~€1≈₹110 and fluctuate with exchange rate. The India-specific 'cascade' regime (adopted 18 April 2024) changes VISA VALIDITY, not the fee — the application fee remains €90 regardless of the validity granted.

Overview

A Schengen visa for Indians is a single short-stay (Type C) visa that lets Indian passport holders travel across 29 European countries on one sticker. Instead of applying separately for France, Germany, Italy, Spain or Switzerland, you make one application and, once approved, move freely within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. This makes it one of the most valuable travel documents for Indian tourists, business travellers and those visiting family in Europe.

Which consulate should you apply to?

This is the single most common mistake Indian applicants make. You must apply to the consulate (via its appointed centre) of the country where you will spend the most nights. If your nights are split equally between countries, you apply to the country of your first entry. Applying to the wrong consulate is a frequent reason for rejection or a wasted appointment, so map your itinerary carefully before booking. Most missions in India accept applications only through VFS Global, while Spain and a few others use BLS International.

Documents Indian applicants need

Consulates assess Indian files closely on financial stability and travel purpose. Prepare a complete, consistent set:

  • Passport valid at least three months beyond your return date, with two blank pages
  • Completed and signed application form with recent photographs meeting Schengen specifications
  • Confirmed return flight and hotel bookings, plus a day-by-day itinerary
  • Recent bank statements (usually last 3-6 months), salary slips, and income tax returns
  • Employment letter, or business registration if self-employed; a cover letter explaining your trip
  • Travel medical insurance covering a minimum of EUR 30,000 for emergencies and repatriation, valid across the whole Schengen Area

Fees, insurance and processing

The adult consular fee is EUR 90 (around INR 9,400), with a reduced EUR 45 for children aged 6-11. On top of this you pay a VFS or BLS service charge of roughly INR 1,900-3,100 per applicant, so most travellers budget INR 11,500-15,000 before insurance. Standard processing is about 15 calendar days from your biometrics appointment, though busy periods or additional checks can extend this to 45 days. Biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) are required and are reused for up to 59 months, and the EU’s Entry/Exit System is tightening border enforcement in 2026.

The India cascade: longer multi-entry visas

Since 18 April 2024 the EU applies a more favourable “cascade” regime to Indian nationals. If you have obtained and lawfully used two Schengen visas within the previous three years, you can be issued a two-year multiple-entry visa. That is normally followed by a five-year multiple-entry visa, provided your passport has enough remaining validity. During validity you can travel repeatedly, still within the 90/180 limit, without reapplying. Note the fee stays a single EUR 90 regardless of validity, and long-validity grants remain at the consul’s discretion rather than an automatic right.

Top reasons Schengen visas are refused

  • Insufficient or unexplained funds in bank statements
  • Weak, inconsistent or unconfirmed itinerary and bookings
  • Missing or non-compliant travel insurance (below EUR 30,000 or not valid Area-wide)
  • Doubts about intent to return to India, or applying to the wrong consulate

Our tips: apply early in the season, keep your itinerary and financials consistent, avoid over-booking cancellable hotels just for the file, and write a clear cover letter. If you travel often, keep records of past visas to build toward a cascade multi-entry grant.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Schengen visa cost for Indians in 2026?

The consular fee is EUR 90 for adults (about INR 9,400) and EUR 45 for children aged 6-11. Adding the VFS or BLS service charge of roughly INR 1,900-3,100, most applicants spend INR 11,500-15,000 before travel insurance and optional services. Confirm the exact amount on the VFS/BLS site for your consulate.

Which country's consulate should I apply to?

Apply to the consulate of the country where you will spend the most nights. If your stay is split equally across several countries, apply to the country you will enter first. Applying to the wrong mission is a common cause of refusal, so plan your itinerary before booking an appointment.

How long does Schengen visa processing take from India?

Standard processing is about 15 calendar days (roughly 10-15 working days) from your biometrics appointment, but complex cases can take up to 45 days. Because appointment slots fill quickly in peak season, apply at least 3-6 weeks before you travel.

Is travel insurance mandatory for a Schengen visa?

Yes. Every Indian applicant must have travel medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 for medical emergencies and repatriation, valid across all Schengen countries for the entire trip. Applications without compliant insurance are routinely refused.

What is the 90/180-day rule?

A Schengen short-stay visa lets you stay a maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area. This applies even to multiple-entry and long-validity visas: the visa's validity is how long you can use it, not how long you can stay per visit.

Can Indians get a 5-year multiple-entry Schengen visa?

Under the EU cascade regime effective April 2024, Indian nationals who have obtained and lawfully used two Schengen visas in the previous three years can receive a two-year multiple-entry visa, usually followed by a five-year visa if the passport has enough validity. It is subject to consular discretion, not guaranteed.

How many countries does a Schengen visa cover?

A single Schengen visa covers 29 countries in the Schengen Area, including popular destinations like France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Austria and Greece. You apply once to your main destination's consulate and can then travel freely between member states.

What are the most common reasons a Schengen visa is refused?

The leading reasons are insufficient or unexplained funds, a weak or inconsistent itinerary, missing or non-compliant insurance, and doubts about your intent to return to India. Applying to the wrong consulate also causes problems. A complete, consistent file greatly improves your chances.
